Gone Girl turned up safe and sound at the top of the North American box office in its debut weekend, just ahead of horror flick Anna-belle, industry data showed on Monday.

The mystery-drama starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Gillian Flynn about a husband who becomes the prime suspect in the disappearance of his wife.

It earned $37.5 million in theaters from Oct 3-5, a whisker more than the $37.1 million taken by Annabelle, about a haunted supernatural doll.
