Toyota expands recall in Japan, China on air bag concerns
Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 190,000 more vehicles - 185,000 in Japan and 5,000 in China - to replace potentially defective air bags made by Takata Corp, and Japan's regulator said it may change its recall system to better respond to what it called an "unprecedented" crisis.
The transport ministry, which also acts as its auto industry regulator, said it was considering revising parts of the existing recall system, but gave no details.
"Changing the law would be a lot more involved, but there are things we can change outside the law," said Masato Sahashi, head of the ministry's recall division. "What we are considering is not something that would take as long as a month or two."
