Typhoon Linfa made landfall on Thursday in Guangdong province, as trains were suspended, schools closed and thousands of fishing boats recalled to port.

Linfa made landfall in Shanwei at 12:15 pm, with winds of up to 126 km/h, according to the provincial meteorological station.

From Wednesday night, gales and torrential rains hit Shantou, about 100 km from Shanwei. Trees were uprooted, and three main bridges to the city and an offshore island county had been closed as of Thursday morning.
