Okinawa governor revokes OK of US base
Tokyo says relocation will go forward anyway, citing public safety concerns
Okinawa's governor on Tuesday revoked approval for work needed to relocate a US air base from one area of the southern Japanese island to another, but the Tokyo government said it would proceed with the plan.
Tokyo wants to move the US Marines' Futenma base to another location on the southern island, but many residents in Okinawa - the site of bloody battles near the end of World War II - resent hosting the US military at all.
