When Liu Qinlong joined Pacific Audio & Video Co, which is based in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou, many of his friends doubted his move.

It was 1998, and rampant piracy had hit China's music industry. The first State-owned entity in this field was suffering losses like many other record companies in the country back then.

But Liu dreamed of working in the company.
