A total of 161 films from 60 countries were submitted for awards, including 17 Chinese productions.
Renowned Chinese documentary director Liang Bibo is a judge at the festival.
"I think, speaking in general, the perception of our country's filmmakers in documentary is at the same level with foreigners."
Festival President Abbas Arnaout has visited China almost every year, he thinks that Chinese documentaries have made great progress over the years.
He spoke about the Chinese documentaries on this year's shortlist.
"We have seen three or four films. Besides they are good films, they have been made in a good way. But also they have human interest, which I like very much."
Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival was first held in 2004, and has gained international recognition, especially in Asian and Arabic countries.
