The largest glass Buddha statue in the world, created by Loretta Yang from Taiwan, is on display at Grand Gateway Plaza in Xujiahui.

The statue is 2 meters tall, featuring Guanyin with 1,000 arms in a standing position, reproduced from the mural at Cave No 3 in Mogaoku Grottos at Dunhuang, in northwestern China's Gansu province.

The mural dates back more than 1,000 years. Yang, an award-winning actress turned glass sculptor, has been determined to reproduce the statue since she first saw it in 1996.

In the past 20 years she has made repeated attempts, sculpting the statue in various dimensions. This is her latest creation, and the largest glass Buddha statue in the history of glass art, says Chang Yi, husband of Yang and co-founder of Liuli Gongfang, a glass studio based in Shanghai and Taiwan.

The free exhibition at the ground-floor lobby of the mall also features other glass sculptures of Buddhism themes, all created by Yang and Chang.
