The ceremony, held in the ninth month on the Chinese lunar calendar, has a history of more than 700 years. The sacrificial ceremony for Genghis Khan was listed as one of China's intangible cultural heritages in 2006.

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is located along a river near Ejen Khoruu Banner of Ordos. The Mausoleum is a cenotaph, where the coffin contains no body, but only headdresses and accessories.

Since the Mongol ethic group in ancient times was fond of burying in secret places, the real mausoleum of Genghis Khan has never been discovered.
