'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' tops Chinese box office

China Film News reported Tuesday that Kingsman: The Golden Circle dominated the Chinese film market during its debut week ending October 22, earning 246 million yuan ($37.1 million)

The movie is Fox’s sequel to the 2015 movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, and according to the Variety, it has already topped 250 million US dollars worldwide. The original movie grossed 286 million dollars in overseas markets.

The action comedy was directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Taron Egerton. In China, the opening weekend was 73 percent ahead of “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”

Domestic comedy Never Say Die came in second with 177 million yuan last week at the box office. It has raked in more than two billion yuan since hitting Chinese screens on September 30.

Third place went to Thai comedy Bad Genius, earning 96 million yuan last week. The film has made over 200 million yuan since its release on October 13.

Chinese film City of Rock landed in fourth place, generating 53 million yuan last week. The comedy has made 400 million yuan since its release on September 29.

Rounding out the top five was Hong Kong action film Chasing The Dragon, which grossed 44 million yuan last week.
