After three years of construction, Hunan's largest freight station-the New North Railway Station of Changsha was put into operation on Jan 8, 2012. The station will play an important role in propelling the economic and social development of the city and the province.

Chen Run'er, secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Committee, declared the opening of the station. Changsha mayor Zhang Jianfei presided over the ceremony.

The new station, with a total investment of nearly four billion yuan ($630 million), is an important part of the relocation and construction of the Changsha North and South Railway Stations. The transport volume of Xianing Station's freight yard is planned to reach 20 million tons in the future, and in the short term five million tons. The annual cargo handling capacity will be three times larger than that of the old one.

"The opening of the station marks the success of the relocation and construction project via the cooperation between the railway departments and the local areas", said Li Wenxin, president of Guangzhou Railway Group. Li said that Guangzhou Railway Group will go all out to promote Hunan's sound and rapid economic and social development.
