Temple fair

Temple fair is a unique custom and one of the most important festivals in Mount Hengshan. Starting in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), it has a history of more than 1,000 years.

Legend has it that Emperor Tianfu, the supreme ruler of heaven who is in charge of the marplots contributes greatly to the well-being of humans. In order to remember his contributions and eulogize his kindness, local residents celebrate his birthday on May 17 of the Chinese lunar calendar each year.

People offer sacrifices and perform to entertain him before or after the birthday, hence the start of the "temple fair" custom. In the past, the temple fair was solely for worship. At present, it has been converted into a large celebration integrating martial arts, acrobatics, songs, dancing, exhibition of calligraphy and colored lantern and antiques. This adds new elements to its original meaning.
