Hunan Liling porcelains have 250 years of history, stemming from the reign of Emperor Yongzheng of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In the years of Emperor Guangxu, Liling started to produce under glazed porcelains of achromatic color and gradually fired them with diversified colors.

The porcelains are made by first drawing colored patterns onto the semi-finished wares and then glazing them and firing them in a high temperature kiln. The pigments contain no lead and the patterns are covered with a layer of transparent glaze to make the porcelains look glassy.

In 2008, the Liling under glazed five-color porcelain processing technique was listed in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritages.
