The 3rd Conference on Science and Technology of Tianjin University(TJU),scheduled from November 26 to December 20, 2018, will feature discussions and keynote speeches. It brings together representatives of the national ministries and well-known domestic and international experts to share their insights into policy developments and technology innovation. During the conference, teachers and students of TJU will discuss the hot issues of science and technology in the new era.
The conference provides insight into the technology research at universities with the greatest potential to change lives, discussions of new policy developments and a chance to hear industry leaders share their expertise and unique insight. Topics of the conference include problems and solutions in key technologies, implementation of policies, think tank construction, and technology evaluation systems. TJU plans to devote great energy in innovation of key technology and strengthen international exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative. It will promote technological transformation and organize high-end faculties and scholars to inspire student innovation.
TJU's eight-year development in Science and Technology
Since its 2010 2nd Conference on Science and Technology, Tianjin University has devoted great energy to science and technology with notable progress. It has adhered to an innovation-driven strategy, keeping abreast of the frontiers of the world’s science and technology and taking root in the real life needs of the national economy. Combining its advantages, TJU has not only pushed forward science and technology but also promoted the transformation of scientific results to improve life.
Innovation system. Since the 2010 conference TJU it has been devoted to strengthening original innovation and integrated innovation capabilities. A full chain of innovation outlay from basic research and key technology breakthroughs to industrial demonstration applications has been established. In the past eight years, TJU has added one national key laboratory, one national engineering research center, one national engineering laboratory, seven regional research institutes, 32 technology transfer centers and sub-centers, and dozens of provincial and ministerial key laboratories and engineering research centers.
Projects. The university times its projects which has helped it rank among the top five for undertaking 973 Plan projects. As of September 30, 2018, it was ranked No. 8 in national universities for leading projects and funding in National Key R&D Programs during 2016-2018 (excluding international cooperation projects).
Faculties. TJU attaches great importance to building a high-level scientific and technological team by establishing a good academic environment and development mechanism. It is committed to offering platforms for young teachers to broaden their horizons and achieve self-development. The Tianjin University Beiyang Young Scholars Program enables them to achieve their goals to a national level. Since the 2nd Conference on Science and Technology of Tianjin University, it has ranked 12th in number of Outstanding Young Scholars nationally.
Papers. TJU has witnessed a steadily growing trend in published scientific result papers. Since the 2nd Conference on Science and Technology of Tianjin University, it ranked 8th in receiving national science and technology awards, and won increased awards at provincial and ministerial-level. The number of SCI papers published has risen significantly. As of October 2018, it ranked 14th in publishing SCI (first author) papers. In addition, TJU has increased its patent holdings and authorized projects. By the end of 2017, it had won six China Patent Awards, tied with Tsinghua University for first place.
Social development. TJU has focused on pushing forward the economic and social development of the area, encouraging the transformation of scientific and technological achievements through regional research institutes and technology transfer centers. New cooperation models with large enterprise groups have been developed to carry out research and development on industrial technologies. Since the 2nd Conference on Science and Technology, it has established 37 industrial technology alliances and 63 school-enterprise joint research institutions and signed 69 school-area cooperation agreements. It has also funded 32 major horizontal projects with a total of more than 10 million yuan, and established 4 public-creation spaces and 71 incubators.
Exchanges. TJU has always encouraged and promoted teachers and students in overseas exchange participation, opening up overseas exchange channels, and building an international cooperation platform. Since the 2nd Conference on Science and Technology of Tianjin University, five national-level international science and technology cooperation bases, 29 Tianjin International Science and Technology Cooperation bases and six intergovernmental international science and technology cooperation projects approved by National Key R&D Program bases were funded with more than 100 million yuan.
Dual-use technology. TJU, following the national development strategy of military and civilian technology integration, promotes the development of national defense science and technology. The research and development of military and civilian dual-use technology is showing rapid momentum. Since the Second Conference on Science and Technology of Tianjin University, the school has undertaken more than 1,100 projects including major special projects, military “863 plan”, national defense “973 plan”, equipment pre-research, military products, and basic scientific research, spending more than 700 million yuan from scientific and technological funds.
Social science. TJU has accelerated its pace in building a new type of think tank, optimizing discipline arrangement and rebuilding its law school. Since the 2010 conference the school has won 70 provincial-level social science awards, and experienced rapid growth in SSCI papers. Two international science and technology think tanks have been built and the Tianjin University Biosafety Strategy Research Center was approved as a non-governmental organization in the United Nations Biological Weapons Convention, the first in Asia. It was invited to participate in the 2017 Biological Weapons Convention. The APEC Sustainable Energy Center participated in the 54th APEC Energy Working Group (EWG) meeting and in publishing the APEC Sustainable Urban Development Annual Report and the APEC Regional Belt and Road Clean Energy Output Strategy Research Report.
