The seminar on "New Subjects and First-class Undergraduate Construction" and the 2019 Annual Conference of the Engineering Education Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Higher Education were held on July 4 in Xi’an, Shaanxi province in Northwest China to vigorously develop new science and accelerate the development of first-class undergraduates.

At the opening ceremony of the conference held on July 5, Rong Mingzhe, vice-president of Xi'an Jiaotong University, delivered a speech to introduce the university's key initiatives and achievements in developing new subjects and accelerating the construction of first-class undergraduate programs in recent years.

The university, the organizer of the conference, has always regarded talent training as its central task, adhered to the basic position of undergraduate teaching, and vigorously trained first-class talents, said Rong.

“Contemporary university education should not confine its vision to the campus fence. It must aim at leading the world's scientific and technological frontier, stay oriented at the country's major needs and the main battlefield of national economy, build forward-looking majors to support the future development of world science and technology, national economy or industry, and cultivate talents to lead the future development of science and technology and industry,” Rong said.

The conference attracted nearly 500 experts and scholars from all kinds of universities and some well-known enterprises in China.

During the conference, a series of activities were held, including a seminar on discipline construction in engineering education, the fourth plenary meeting of the Fifth Council of the Engineering Education Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Higher Education and the Eighth Standing Board Meeting of the Fifth Council of the Industry Committee of Engineering Education of the Chinese Society of Higher Education.
