Davis Cup winner to sell trophy after burglaries
( 2001-05-31 09:56 ) (7 )

Australian former Grand Slam champion Mervyn Rose is to sell his 1952 Davis Cup player's trophy because he is afraid thieves will steal it from his Coffs Harbour home, Tennis Australia said on Wednesday.

Rose, 71, winner of seven Grand Slam titles in the 1950s including the French and Australian Open singles crowns, is putting the trophy up for auction through an online retailer.

"We've been broken into a few times," Rose said. "My main motivation is that someone will get in and take them or ruin them - they are so fragile. Before I put them in a safe deposit box in a bank, but you can't leave them there all your life."
