Two sides urged to link up
( 2001-06-01 00:11 ) (9 )

Mobile communications companies of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan should strengthen ties to gain a favourable position in the market, according to officials and industry leaders from both sides of the Taiwan Straits at China's biggest communications exhibition Thursday.

Lou Peide, head of telecommunications products and systems department under the Ministry of Information Industry, pointed out at the China International Mobile Communications 2001 (Olympicom 2001) that companies across the Taiwan Straits were complementary and could help each other.

"The mainland market is very big. There will be plenty of business opportunities,'' said Lou.

Industrial organizations across the Straits will establish a special team to conduct regular exchanges. This will include Taiwanese companies' involvement in the mainland market and discussions on future technological standards, according to Simon Huang, managing director of the Taipei Computer Association.

Olympicom 2001, which will run through Sunday in Beijing, is the biggest communications product fair in the country.

It was organized by two major domestic telecom players -- China Electronics Corporation and China Electronic Component Corporation.
