China Daily is 20 years old today (Zi Mi) 06/01/2001 China Daily, the only national English-language newspaper in China, is striving to become a globally-recognized media outlet and strengthen its role as one of the most authoritative voices on China.Zhu Yinghuang, editor-in-chief of China Daily, conveyed this message yesterday at a grand reception at the Great Hall of the People to celebrate the newspaper's 20th birthday today. "China Daily will consolidate its role as an information bridge connecting China with people around the world," said Zhu. A total of 450 people including governmental officials, company representatives and readers from home and abroad were present at the reception. John F. Berry, first secretary of the United States Embassy in Beijing, said China Daily has provided him with the latest information in China ranging from government news and culture to the everyday aspects of Chinese life. "I read it every day and it is the first paper I read when I get to my office," said Berry. "Even my wife finds quite a lot of local information in it that she enjoys very much." The newspaper has evolved from a single daily paper in 1981 to a newspaper group, with eight English-language publications distributed in more than 150 countries and regions. It also provides information on the Internet via a website that receives 2 million hits a day. Zhao Qizheng, minister of the State Council's Information Office, said that China Daily has played a significant role in providing news and information to people around the world who want to know about China.
