Messages from overseas () 06/01/2001 The press plays an irreplaceable role in civil society. It ensures that peoples' views and opinions, the engines of social change, are exchanged and debated, and that news from the outside world transcends national boundaries. As China's only national foreign-language newspaper, the China Daily promotes this free commerce of information. On this, its 20th Anniversary, I send the China Daily my best wishes, and hope that it will continue to educate and enlighten for many years to come.-Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings and congratulations to all the staff of the China Daily on the occasion of the paper's 20th anniversary. I thank the China Daily for its contribution to strengthening the links between Canada and China and to promoting an enduring friendship. -Jean Chretien, Canadian Prime Minister I congratulate the staff and readers of the China Daily on the occasion of the paper's 20th anniversary of publication. Australia welcomes the contribution the China Daily has made to promoting mutual understanding between the people of China and Australia. The very good economic and political relationship between our two countries is strengthened by the promotion of such links between our two peoples. I commend the China Daily for its efforts in this area. -John Howard, Australian Prime Minister
