China Unicom has launched its CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile phone network project in Shanghai with an investment of 1 billion yuan (US$120 million). Its Shanghai branch has signed supply contracts with Shanghai Bell Co Ltd, Lucent Technology (China) Co Ltd and Samsung Electronics. The first phase of the project will be completed in October to serve 510,000 CDMA customers. Within three years, about 2 million customers will be able to access CDMA.
