Yunnan, Xiamen fight against drug trafficking
( 2001-06-27 00:57 ) (8 )

The police and customs administration have launched a series of anti-drug campaigns to break up drug trafficking rings during the past few months.

In southwest Yunnan Province, large numbers of drug traffickers and sellers were arrested and 517 of them were imprisoned for five years or longer.

A drug seller named Lei Yongxiu was caught last July when policemen found 1,112 grams of heroin hidden in a carefully processed tire that Lei had.

The traffickers Li Shuanghua and Zhou Wenwei secretly transported "ice" from Myanmar into China last February. They were captured when their seller, Yao Cuihua, was seized by police hawking "ice" in the city of Dali, located in the province.

The police and legal authorities have been keeping a vigilant eye on drug distribution, which was once rampant in the area, and vowed to crack down on the dirty drug trade.

Customs officials at Xiamen, port city in southeast Fujian Province, also crushed many attempts by heroin smugglers to get the drug to other areas in China. Last year, the officials uncovered four cases of drug smuggling and confiscated 4,919 grams of heroin.
