Bids for Madonna's childhood home top two million dollars
( 2001-08-31 10:55 ) (7 )

Bidding for pop star Madonna's childhood home in Rochester Hills, Michigan, has topped two million dollars, according to information posted on the online auction site eBay Thursday.

The owners of the modest four-bedroom, two-bathroom home in a leafy part of Rochester Hills (population: 62,000), southeastern Michigan, were originally seeking 324,000 dollars for the 2,700 square-foot "colonial-style" building.

But the home's eBay sale-site has received some 7,500 hits and 25 bids since it was first posted on August 21, and prospective buyers still have another month to make an offer on the home which the singer and actress shared with her father, stepmother, and seven siblings growing up.

The current non-binding bid is two million, three hundred dollars -- quite a jump on the average price of a home in this town north of Detroit: US$ 140,000.

The Material Girl lived in the home "from the time she was in sixth grade (11/12 years of age) until she left for the University of Michigan," and she's made pit stops here when she visited her parents or toured in the area ever since, according to a profile on the website.

"The house has appeared recently on several television shows about Madonna and in numerous biographies," it continues, adding that the home has been unoccupied since Madonna's father and stepmother left it in July.

The online auction has become something of a celebrity trend: the owners of Bob Dylan's childhood home in Duluth, Minnesota disposed of their property on the site and the owners of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix's boyhood home are trying to do the same with the house in Seattle, Washington state.
