Europeans to donate slice of Ryder Cup profits to charity
( 2001-09-03 09:36 ) (7 )

Europe's Ryder Cup committee will donate some of its anticipated 10 million pounds (US$14.51 million) match profit to charity, it announced on Sunday.

Europe face the United States in the biennial Ryder Cup competition at The Belfry from September 28-30.

European Tour executive director Ken Schofield, in Munich for Europe's Ryder Cup team announcement on Sunday, said: "We have provision in our budget for a charitable donation which has been agreed in principle.

"The amount has not yet been agreed.

"We are very optimistic that we are going to have record surpluses. I'm not sure if all the counting is complete but the hope for this home match is that we will get very close to the first surplus reaching 10 million pounds."

The American committee already makes a donation to charity, although Schofield said the European donations would not necessarily follow the American example.
