Frequent flyers benefit

China Eastern Airlines has signed its first international hotel partnership contract with the Shangri-La hotel group in Pudong to begin its frequent flyer programme. Under the programme, passengers will be given 800 kilometres each time they stay at any of Shangri-La's 38 hotels and resorts. Gao Pei, general manager of the airline's marketing and sales section, said the partnership will greatly improve the airline's services.

Speedy Pentium 4 arrives

Intel is marketing the 2GHz Pentium 4, its fastest computer processor, in China. Michael Splinter, executive vice-president and marketing director for global sales at Intel Corp, said Intel sees good prospects for the Chinese market and is satisfied with current sales of its new processors in China.

Furniture fair

An international furniture exhibition will be held at the city's four exhibitions centres - Shanghaimart, Shanghai International Exhibition Centre, Hongqiao Furniture Fair and Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Centre. Co-sponsored by the China National Furniture Association and Shanghai MF Sinoexpo International Exhibition Company Ltd, the 4-day exhibition includes 800 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions.

Loan for crane Co

Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co Ltd, an internationally recognized manufacturer of cranes and large steel structures, has received a 600-million-yuan (US$72.3 million) loan from the Shanghai Branch of the Export-Import Bank of China. The loan will be used to fund the manufacturing of 12 container cranes which are expected to be delivered to the Port of Longbeach in the United States between May and July next year.

Tibet assistance project

Some 60 tractors and a number of other agricultural machines from Shanghai have been sent to Xigaze in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, marking the start of another assistance project for the prefecture. The project will cover 16 programmes in the fields of infrastructure, agriculture, industry and culture and education. It will involve a total investment of 167 million yuan (US$20 million), including 83 million yuan (US$10 million) from Shanghai and 84 million yuan (US$10 million) from East China's Shandong Province.

New Kodak services

In a major extension of its traditional line of business, Kodak recently introduced some new products and services at the Kodak express outlets in Shanghai and other cities in China. In addition to IP telephone cards, photo albums, and stationery decorated with the image of flash star A-Kuei, the new products will include trendy clocks, radios, and calculators. Theater goers will even be able to book tickets to their favourite performances via the Internet at the outlets.

Noni juice pours in

Noni Juice, a health drink in Western countries, aims to gain a presence in China by being the first such company to enter Shanghai. Noni juice is made of noni, a green plant grown on Tahiti, Hawaii and other islands in the South Pacific. Its medicinal effects are produced from the noni's roots, stems and leaves, which contain proxeronine and xeronine, said to be necessary for good health. Shanghai Caihui Trading Company has gained the agency rights from California-based Healthy Nature Resources for Noni Juice's operations in Shanghai and China.

Open-end fund debuts

China's first and long-anticipated open-end investment fund will make its debut next Tuesday. The Hua'an Innovation Investment Fund, a contractual open-end fund, will be launched by the Shanghai-based Hua'an Fund Management Co Ltd. An initial 5 billion units, each with a face value of 1 yuan (US$0.12), will be sold to retail and institutional investors by the Bank of Communications, the fund custodian, in its 139 branches in 13 cities.

Semi-furnished units

Ruihong Xincheng, a huge property project on a site measuring 40 hectares, will start selling two semi-furnished apartments in two high-rise buildings tomorrow. Clients can choose different designs and colours from a menu prepared by the developer - Shui On Properties from Hong Kong. The Ruihong Xincheng is one of a dozen projects listed by the city's land and housing administration to promote the semi-furnished housing market.
