Shenzhen customs seizes more smuggled telecommunications equipment Shenzhen Customs seized more than 101,500 sets of smuggled telecommunications equipment in 2001, up 20-fold year on year. The seized items included over 25,000 mobile phones, with a combined value of more than 32.47 million yuan (US$3.91 million). Last year, customs officers cracked down hard on the smuggling of high-tech products, especially telecommunications equipment, in order to create a favorable environment for the development of information technology and high-tech industries in the city, one of China's five special economic zones. As a result of the hard strike on telecommunications equipment smuggling, cases of mobile phone smuggling have been effectively curbed. Customs officers said last year they found no cases of mobile phone smuggling at sea. |
