HENAN

31 contracts signed at peony festival

Thirty-one contracts, worth US$430 million, were signed with overseas investors during the 20th Luoyang Peony Fair and the 2nd International Investment Fair at Luoyang in Central China's Henan Province on Tuesday.

The contracts include tourism, chemical, infrastructure, information, agriculture and real estate projects, Henan Daily reported yesterday.

More than 60 business representatives from the United States, Japan, Germany, Australia and Canada visited the city's annual event.

Deer fed 2.5 kg of

plastic bags, dies

A deer died in Nanjing Zoo in the capital of East China's Jiangsu Province on Tuesday after being fed more than 2.5 kilograms of plastic bags by visitors, Sina.com reported yesterday.

The plastic bags were found in its stomach during the autopsy. Visitors had given the plastic bags along with eatables to the deer despite the zoo's warning not to do so.

Accident used as

a decoy to rob drivers

Police in Fuzhou in East China's Fujian Province have caught a suspected member of robbers' gang which used minor traffic accidents as a decoy to rob unsuspecting drivers.

Haixia Metropolis News reports that one of the victims, surnamed Zhou, said he was driving a van on Monday when a motorcycle drew close and he heard the sound of metal scratching metal.

Zhou immediately stopped to inspect his van. But the minute he stepped out, one of the men of the motorcycle reached into the driver's compartment and grabbed his bag.

Zhou clutched at them, pulled off the suspect, surnamed Teng, but his accomplice escaped on the motorcycle.

Police had received report of a similar robbery in March, in which a bag containing 32,000 yuan (US$3,855) was snatched.

GUANGDONG

1.06m VCDs, porno

consignment seized

Guangzhou Municipal Industrial and Commercial Administration personnel seized more than 1.06 million pirated VCDs from a warehouse at Yudan Village in the city's Tianhe District on Tuesday.

Guangzhou-based New Express News reported yesterday that a large number of pornographic books and magazines too were seized.

Officials suspect the warehouse to have been a major pirated and smuggled goods centre.

Asthma drug in pig

poisons 31 villagers

Altogether, 31 Suixi villagers in the western part of Guangdong Province suffered from food poisoning after eating rancid pork for lunch on Tuesday, Shenzhen special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

The victims complained of headache and palpitation after the meal and were rushed to hospital.
