  Workshop repacking expired medicines shut
()
04/18/2002
The Hongkou District branch of Shanghai Bureau of Industry and Commerce has shut down a workshop that used to repack expired medicines, reports Xinmin Evening News.

Ten cartons of expired medicines were confiscated and the suspected head of the workshop, Chen Lin, an Anhui Province native, was detained, officials said.

Chen has been accused of setting up roadside stalls in Hongkou since January to buy expired medicines at three to five yuan (40-60 US cents) a pack. After repacking, the medicines were sold to out-of-town agents.

More US tourists

can be expected

Though the number of visitors from the United States climbed up only marginally in the first two months, officials expect the number of tourists to rise, reports Wenhui Daily.

About 14,000 Americans visited Shanghai in the first two months, 0.05 per cent higher than in the same period last year.

January and February are usually "slow seasons" for American tourists, Shanghai Tourism Commission officials said.

The number of US tourists dropped by 18 per cent in the last three months of 2001 following the September 11 attacks.

Do not trust TV host

push-selling medicine

Beware of television and radio programme hosts recommending a certain kind of medicines because they are very likely to have been bribed by the medicine companies, reports Shanghai Morning Post.

Shanghai Consumers' Association said it was investigating accusations that medical companies paid medical experts to push their products on health programmes.

Man gets death for

killing of co-workers

Song Zhengyuan, a 22-year-old railway station worker, was sentenced to death on Monday by the Shanghai Rail Transportation Intermediate People's Court on two counts of murder, reports Xinmin Evening News.

Song signalled two trains to pass by on December 17 last year, thus almost causing them to collide.

The two drivers were stabbed to death after they refused his pleas to cover up the incident.

Song was arrested a day after the murders on December 20.

2 held for stealing

cable TV connection

Police have detained two men for connecting their TV sets to a cable network illegally and causing a two-day TV programme black-out for about 1,000 families in Jiading District's Huating Township.

Xinmin Evening News reports that Wang Benyun and Shu Qiguo tried to hook on to the cable network on April 6.

The cable company discovered a badly-installed link to Wang and Shu's apartment after getting complaints from subscribers.
