NEPCON to keep its edge in Shanghai
()
04/19/2002
NEPCON Shanghai 2002, unveiled last Tuesday, is striving to gain a firm footing in the China market as it faces strong competition from new rivals.

The show, held in Shanghai for the 12th time, opened less than a month after ElectronicChina 2002.

ElectronicChina 2002, organized by the powerful Messe Muenchen GmbH, China National Electronic Import & Export Corp and China Electronic Appliance Corp, was a great success drawing hundreds of exhibitors to the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Pudong, also a German investment.

Li Baosheng, executive vice-chairman of CCPIC Electronics and Information Industry Sub-Council, an organizer of NEPCON Shanghai 2002, said they were trying to further improve services and increase advertising and media publicity to keep its leading status in the field. He said NEPCON, of which the Reed Exhibitions is also a major sponsor, is still the best show of its kind in China.

The fast developing electronic and information industries have created a huge demand for electronic production equipment and NEPCON has enjoyed growing business in China despite strong competition, Li said.

With more sophisticated global sales network, strong financial backing and experienced staff, international exhibition companies have rushed to China after the country's entry into the WTO to vie for a share of the market. Competition has become especially fierce at electronic industrial exhibitions.

Li admitted that the newcomer Messe Muenchen is a very strong competitor. "We are not afraid but we will pay attention to our rivals," Li said.

Li said they will also learn from international exhibition companies to make up for their disadvantages.

Past efforts to join hands by exhibition companies have failed, because of haggling over profit sharing. And Li is not optimistic about any short-term co-operation to merge shows.

But he revealed that NEPCON will adjust its time next year to March, so that exhibitors and visitors coming to Shanghai will be able to attend several shows on a single trip.

NEPCON Shanghai 2002, with a floor space of 15,000 square metres housing 450 exhibitors from a dozen countries and regions, will close at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Centre on Friday. About 70 per cent of the exhibitors this time come from overseas.
