Beijing Builds Transport Logistics Support Centers ( 2002-08-09 13:45) (Xinhua)
Beijing plans to invest more thana billion U.S. dollars in creating three major transport logistics support centers in the next several years. The three centers under construction include the Southwest Logistics Support Center in Fangshan District, Jingtai Logistics Support Port in Shunyi District and Tongzhou Logistics Support Park in Tongzhou District. Wang Zhitai, an expert in logistics support, said the projects were designed to alleviate traffic congestion in Beijing and pressure on the environment while facilitating the distribution of 100 million tons of goods each year. The Southwest Logistics Support Center, which is expected to cost about 10 billion yuan, has been included in the 2001-2005 social and economic development plan for the capital city. About 444 ha of land has been reserved for the Southwest Logistics Support Center, where railways, highways and aviation transportation will converge in its mid-term development plan. The center will be connected by railways with Tianjin in north China.
