Beijing to build new TV Center in CBD ( 2003-01-17 11:00) (Xinhua)
Construction began on the new Beijing TV Center on December 12. Upon completion the center will be a large mass media center with a formidable presence in the skyline of Beijing's Chaoyang Business District (CBD). The new Beijing TV Center is one of the 60 key projects to be built in the city. Construction of the building will not only help boost the city's TV industry but also contribute to the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing. The building will cover a construction area of 36,100 sqm, with a floor space of 183,000 sqm. It will contain a comprehensive business building, a multi-functional telecasting center, a service center and various other supporting facilities. The 75,000 sqm comprehensive business building will have 44 floors, 41 of them above ground and 3 underground. A 200-meter-long dragon will be built spiraling up out the main building, indicating "Rising Prosperity". The interior will adopt an open layout, consisting a telecasting center, an information center, program directing centers and editing offices. The multi-functional telecasting center, covering an area of over 40,000sqm, will be qualified for telecasting, recording and live transmission. The spacious square, surrounded by the previously mentioned buildings and the service center, will be used for open-air performances. Construction on the main part of the building complex is expected to be completed by 2005, installation of telecasting equipment in 2006 and trial operations by 2007. Upon its completion, the 236-meter-high Beijing TV Center will become a symbol of the city's development.
