Beijing purchases famous Swedish sculptures ( 2003-01-17 11:01) (Xinhua)
Beijing Municipical Government signed an agreement on November 17 with the
Carl Millers Museum of Sweden to purchase two masterpiece sculptures created by
the famous sculptor-Carl Millers.
The two works are "Man & Flying Horse" and "Hand of the God". The first
one features a flying horse and a man flying towards the sky. It demonstrates
the artist's concept of the pursuit of freedom. There are several copies of the
sculpture that have been exhibited in countries such as Sweden, USA, Japan,
Indonesia and Australia. The other piece was the last work produced by Millers
at Cranbrook College where he worked as Dean of the Sculpture Department.
Carl Millers was was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1895. He worked as Rodin's
assistant and his works were very much influenced by the concepts of this French
master. Millers made his own name famous in 1925 when he won an award at the
World Exhibition held in Paris. He was famous for fountain design and public
sculptures. Carl Millers died in 1955.
It is the first time for the Beijing Municipal Government to purchase a
masterpiece sculpture. The sculpture will be placed in one the main Olympic
venues.
