Shanghai's transportation sector recovering
( 2003-06-22 10:14) (Xinhua)

Shanghai's transportation sector is quickly recovering business lost due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak.

A growing number of travelers were returning to air, railway and bus transport at one of China's major transportation hubs.

Sources with railway, civil aviation and shipping sectors said that most passenger planes, buses, and trains suspended during the outbreak had resumed operation.

The railway sector in Shanghai is transporting more than 64,000 passengers per day on average, about 80 percent of the volume before the outbreak of the disease.

Sources with the Shanghai Eastern Airlines said that the number of flights from Shanghai to Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other destinations climbed to about 50, twice the number during the peak of the SARS crisis.

The number of outbound passenger buses totaled 2,400, about 80 percent of the normal volume.

Local transportation officials said that the inter-provincial tourism business was also picking up.

The number of passengers passing through Shanghai's shipping port was double that of April and May.
