Six students drowned after boat sinks in South China
( 2003-07-01 14:46) (Xinhua)

Six primary school students drowned after their boat capsized on Monday in a flooded river in Tengxian County in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The local government said consistent torrential rain in the past few days flooded some sections of the road along the river in Liufang Village.

A villager named Long Shuiquan used his own boat to take the students to school.

The accident occurred when water suddenly rushed into the bow of the craft, causing the engine to stall. The boat capsized and the 37 passengers aboard plunged into the water.

Five students were missing and 32 passengers were pulled from the water, but one student died later.

Around 2:00 p.m. that day, the bodies of the five missing were discovered.

Upon receiving news of the accident, local government officials rushed to the spot to direct rescue work.

Further investigation was still underway.
