Mavericks sign Nelson to three-year extension
( 2003-07-02 09:13) (Reuters)

The Dallas Mavericks have rewarded coach Don Nelson for the team's recent success by awarding him a three-year contract extension, team owner Mark Cuban said on Tuesday.

Nelson, also the Mavericks' general manager, guided the club to a franchise-best 60 wins and a berth in the Western Conference finals last season.

"I'm glad Mark and I reached an agreement and we can get on to the business of improving our team," Nelson said. "The bottom line was I wanted to remain the coach of the Mavericks.

"I believe I am the right person for the job and look forward to building on our recent successes."

The team has improved its record each of the last four years under Nelson, totalling 40, 53, 57 and 60 wins.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

In six seasons under Nelson, the Mavericks are 245-199 and have made three straight playoff appearances following a five-year drought.

In 25 years as a coach with Dallas, New York, Golden State and Milwaukee, Nelson has a record of 1,096-828.
