Thirteen die in Huaihe River floods
( 2003-07-08 09:25) (Xinhua)

Thirteen people have died in the worst floods in China's Huaihe River valley since 1991.

Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) statistics show the three provinces within the valley - Anhui, Jiangsu and Henan - have suffered total direct economic losses of nearly 7.2 billion yuan ( 871 million US dollars).

By July 6, over 21 million residents in Anhui, the worst-hit region, had been affected by the floods and 1.16 million hectares of farmland were ruined. The province had over 5,700 villages besieged by floodwaters and over 1.15 million people were cut off from help.

So far, flooding has caused the evacuation of 378,900 people in Anhui Province, east China, including 200,000 from the flood- stricken Huaihe River areas.

The official statistics also show that Jiangsu had over 13 million people affected by the floods and 710,000 hectares of farmland ruined by July 6.

After continual rainfall in many parts of the province, local rescue teams have been working to provide food, potable water and accommodation for victims.

The MCA also allocated 37 million yuan of disaster relief funds to Anhui and sent 11,000 tents to Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces.
