10-year-old schoolgirl to swim Qiongzhou Straits
( 2003-07-15 08:42) (China Daily)

A 10-year-old girl from Beijing is planning to set a world record by becoming the youngest person to swim the Qiongzhou Straits between Guangdong and Hainan provinces next Tuesday.

The girl, Wang Yiyan, and her father arrived in Hainan Province last Thursday in preparation for the swim of more than 20 kilometres.

Wang, a primary school student from Beijing, started swimming at age three and her formal swimming training began at seven.

This is the second time the girl has attempted the swim.

On August 28 last year, Wang tried for the world record, but was forced to abandon the plan after being seriously stung twice by jellyfish 500 metres into the swim.

But the little girl is still planning to conquer the Qiongzhou Straits despite the setback.

Wang will start her swim at Xuwen County in South China's Guangdong Province as she did last year, her coach said.
