Macao officials to report on preparations for Wushu World Championship Tournament ( 2003-07-20 11:14) (Xinhua)
An eight-member delegation composed of officials with the preparation committee of the 7th Wushu World Championship Tournament (WWCT) left for Tokyo on Saturday to report to the executive member meeting of the International Wushu Federation (IWF) on its preparations to host the event. The 7th WWCT will be held in Macao, China on November 2-7, which is expected to draw over 1,000 Wushu masters from over 80 countries and regions in the world. The delegation led by the president of the Macao Sports Development Board Vong Iao Lek will elaborate on Macao's overall preparations for the event and its preventive measures against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) infection during the games. IWF representatives came on an inspection tour to Macao earlier this month, which gave a positive evaluation on Macao's preparation work. This year's world tournament will be the first to name prescribed-series of skills and add two medals for women's kick-boxing and group-fight contest. Macao has been training field judges for the increased items. Macao's qualification selection of athletes to compete for the Championship tournament will be held from July 20 to 29. The year 2003 is a key time for Wushu, known as the Chinese martial art or Kong Fu, to bid for its entry into the Olympic Games. The success of the event would be important to strengthen the effort.
