( 2003-07-20 17:26) (chinadaily.com.cn)

A bus carrying 45 passengers plunged off a mountain road in Southwest China's Guizhou province, killing 23 people and injuring 22, a local traffic policeman said on Sunday.

Twenty-one people were killed at the scene and two died in hospital after the bus rolled off a 100 metre (330 ft) cliff on Saturday afternoon in rural area of Guizhou province, some 350 km (220 miles) north of the Vietnamese border.

The bus was travelling from the provincial capital of Guiyang to Zhijin county.

A Guizhou police official contacted by telephone confirmed the accident and said a preliminary investigation showed the accident took place as the driver, who was alive but injured, was making a quick turn on the mountainous road. Three of the victims were children, he said.
