"Everyone is an ironclad hero": officer
( 2003-07-22 17:20) (PLA Daily)

On May 18, 1951, the 193rd Division of a corps under the Chinese Peoples Volunteers' was battling hard in the north of Foyan Mountain in Seoul, Korea. The enemies were one cavalary division and other three brigades of the US. After the war, Yang Dezhi, commander of the 19th Army Corps, recorded in a book "Memoir of Yang Dezhi" on page 559:

"The combat of the corps of our volunteers was extremely severe. Since nearby corps had retreated 60 to 100 kilometers, they had no fire support. It was hard for logistics support to follow up, and the troop lacked food and ammunition. Some of our divisions and regiments besieged by the enemy for several times still fought tenaciously. Zheng Sansheng, commander of the 193rd Division led the troop holding the ground in the area of the southeast, Foyan Mountain, Shuiluo Mountain and Guoci Peak. The second battalion of the 579th Regiment was holding on the Foyan Mountain. 299 men from the second battalion arrived at the position. After three days' severe fighting, when they retreated under order on May 20, only 37 men were alive."

Then the "Memoir of Yang Dezhi" went on:

On May 19, 1951, "the First Platoon of the 8th Company under the 58th Regiment of the 194th Division of a corps defeated the besiegement of the enemy many times in the area of resistance, Tumei Mountain ¡ At last only one soldier Cao Bangguo was alive on the position. He did not fear at all ¡The army corps awarded the platoon a large banner saying 'everyone is an ironclad hero'¡"
