Downpour floods rivers in Sichuan ( 2003-07-29 07:40) (China Daily) Heavy rain at the weekend caused flooding in all
the rivers in Southwest China's Sichuan Province.
However, the water
levels remained below the safety levels.
But the rainfall caused a
landslide in Luding County, and 230 passengers on 14 buses were trapped in the
county's Hailuogou scenic site. No casualties had been reported by press time
last night.
In the middle and lower regions of the Yangtze River, the
temperatures were still unusually high yesterday.
An unnamed senior
official with the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters quoted by
the Xinhua News Agency yesterday said that attention should be paid not only to
rivers that have flooded but also to drought-hit areas.
In Central
China's Hunan Province, about 1 million people have had problems getting enough
drinking water due to a continued drought.
The provincial government
urged the grass-roots authorities in Hunan to redouble their efforts against the
drought and help keep any losses at a minimum.
There has been a lack of
water for irrigation and drinking water for cattle in 64 counties in
Hunan.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said water
levels on the Huaihe River have dropped below warning levels after a month of
flooding but new cases of flooding have arisen in Northeast China.
The
Ministry of Water Resources said that, as of 8 am yesterday, the water level at
the Wangjiaba hydrological station on the upper reaches of the Huaihe was 26.49
metres, 1 centimetre below the warning mark.
The water level at the
Huainan hydrological station on the middle reaches of the Huaihe dropped to
22.92 metres, 8 centimetres below the warning mark.
But Xinhua News
Agency said a branch of the Nenjiang River, a major river in Northeast China,
began to flood on Sunday due to continuous rain. The agency did not name the
branch in question.
The water level on the main section of the Nenjiang
was reported to be close to the warning level.
As of 4 pm on Sunday, the
water level at the Nianzishan hydrological station on the Yalu River had reached
215.71 metres, 31 centimetres higher than the warning
mark.
