Glacier in NW China to welcome visitors in September
( 2003-07-31 15:52) (Agencies)

China's "July 1" glacier on Qilian Mountain in northwest China's Gansu Province will open to visitors in September.

The glacier is 116 kilometers from Jiayuguan City, the closest distance between a glacier and a city in Asia.

The glacier was discovered by a team of scientists with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, on July 1, 1958. The glacier was named after the date it was found.

The "July 1" glacier is a continental deposit glacier 50.5 kilometers long, with its ice peak 5,150 meters above sea level

Four sq km of the 10-sq-km glacier can be used for sight-seeing and exploration purposes.

Jiayuguan City has been building roads leading to the glacier, slope protection and footways for tourists since last year.

Construction of other facilities such as lodgings, an aid post and other service facilities has also been completed.
