( 2003-08-03 15:26) (Xinhua)

Baoding Yingli New Energy Co. Ltd., with an annual capacity of 48 megawatts of solar battery, went into trial operation in Baoding City of Hebei Province, north China.

Based in the state-class Baoding New and High-tech Development Zone, the company has got a state permit to build solar power stations, company officials said.

"The plant makes China one of the leading countries in solar battery production," said Qu Geping, renowned Chinese environmental protection expert.

With the company in operation, the development and exploitation of solar energy in China would be on the fast track, he added.

The company, believed to be the largest in Asia and seventh largest in the world in terms of annual capacity, is bidding for solar power projects in foreign countries like Brazil and Thailand.
