Millennium babies not as numerous ( 2003-08-06 10:41) (China Daily)
While Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province frets about overflowing kindergartens
thanks to the birth explosion in 2000, Shanghai has no such worries, reports
Shanghai Morning Post.
While many parents around China carefully timed the births of their children
to coincide with the first year of the new century, the Shanghai Statistics
Bureau said the city did not experience a baby boom in 2000, with just 6,950
babies born in the city that year.
Although it was still the highest number of births in recent years, it will
not put too much pressure on local kindergartens, said the
bureau.
