Hong Kong's e-readiness ranks higher in EIU survey this year
( 2003-08-11 10:49) (Agencies)

Hong Kong's level of e-readiness ranks 10th in the world and 2nd in the Asia-Pacific region, an e-readiness survey conducted by the United Kingdom-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in cooperation with IBM reveals.

According to Nigel Knight, a Hong Kong-based partner of IBM's Business Consulting Services, the survey, which covers 60 economies in the world, including 16 Asia-Pacific economies, found the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has moved up from its previous 14th ranking to 10th this year.

"That's the global ranking. But again, in Asia Pacific, which is where we are interested in, I guess, Hong Kong has come in as No. 2 behind Australia and ahead of Singapore," he said.

Knight stressed, "There are two key areas which Hong Kong has come up very strongly: strong connectivity in terms of uptake of mobile, broadband, so on.... And the second thing is government policy and legal framework...."

He said that businesses here are also willing to accept e-government practices.

The Hong Kong government is always interested in keeping itself competitive by keeping being informed of some of the latest practices elsewhere and being willing to be committed to the latest trends, Knight said.
