Jakarta makes arrests in hotel bombing case-police ( 2003-08-16 16:54) (Agencies)
Indonesian police said on Saturday they had arrested a number of people in
connection with the August 5 bombing of a luxury Jakarta hotel, which killed 12
people and wounded 150.
"Yes, we have made arrests," national police chief General Da'i Bachtiar told
reporters, but he declined to say when the arrests took place or how many people
had been detained.
Bachtiar said more details would be announced later, adding: "We still have
time for further investigation, but the direction we are heading in is that they
are suspects."
The arrests, in relation to the blast at the JW Marriott Hotel, came as
Indonesia prepared to celebrate its independence day on Sunday amid tight
security.
Australia has warned of possible fresh militant strikes on soft targets,
including shopping malls and hotels, over the weekend. Several western
countries, including the United States, have warned their citizens to avoid
public places.
