Tropical storm Vamco reaches east China's Zhejiang Province ( 2003-08-20 17:01) (Agencies)
Tropical storm Vamco hit Aojiang in Pingyang County, east China's Zhejiang
Province, on Wednesday.
At 11 a.m. the storm was centered inside Pingyang County, producing a fresh
gale monitored at 19 meters per second in the central areas, said local
sources. At present, the eye of the storm is moving at 30 km per hour
northwest.
Zhejiang Provincial meteorological observatory said in a forecast that the
eye of the storm would continue to move northwest, but its intensity will keep
falling, and the low pressure caused by the storm would reach the juncture
between Zhejiang and Jiangxi Province around Wednesday evening then fade.
Affected by Vamco + named after a river in southwest Vietnam + torrential
rains pounded most of Zhejiang Wednesday, while winds rising to gale force is
expected to whip the sea off the east China coast near Zhejiang Thursday.
Local meteorological departments warned the torrential rains might cause
landslides and mud-and-rock flows in the province. They also told ship operators
to return to harbor.
