Earthquakes hit Tibet and Sichuan, one dead ( 2003-08-22 11:00) (Xinhua)
A woman was killed in a landslide caused by Monday's earthquake in Medog
County, in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, according to local
officials.
Six others were injured in the earthquake - one in Medog
County and five in Bomi County.
The quake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter
scale, occurred at 17: 03 Beijing time Monday where Medog, Bomi and Nyingchi
counties meet (29.6 degrees latitude north, 95.6 degrees longitude east), in
eastern Tibet.
Medog County government officials said that three towns in
the county have been affected by the earthquake, and most school buildings there
have been so badly damaged that classes have had to be suspended.
As
Medog is the only county in China that has no highways, relief work there is
greatly hampered, according to the officials.
Earthquake hits SW China's Sichuan
province
An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale
jolted southwest China's Sichuan province Thursday morning, according to the
China Seismological Bureau.
The tremor occurred at 10:17 Beijing time in
Yanyuan county (27. 4 degrees latitude north and 101.3 degrees longitude east)
in the Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, southwest Sichuan province, and
the epicenter was in Gansheng village, according to the bureau.
Gansheng
village has no access to highways or telephones. Rescue teams led by local
authorities have rushed to the scene.
