Rock sculptures in the Helan Mountains ( 2003-08-24 17:00)
Over 1,000 rock paintings are scattered over the cliffs on both sides of a
long valley in the eastern Helan Mountains, only 50 km from Yinchuan.
More than half of the rock paintings fall into the category of
patterns of anthropoid heads. The rest are depictions of cattle, horses, sheep,
donkeys, wolves, other kinds of animals, the sun, the moon, stars, or human
hands and feet, inscriptions in the Western Xia language, and pictures of
stories and legends concerning hunting and sacrifices to gods and ancestors. The
local people call it the art gallery of their nationality.
