New society set up to promote logistics
( 2003-09-06 10:38) (China Daily)

The Society of Transportation & Logistics (STL), an affiliate of the China Communications and Transportation Association, was established on Friday in Beijing.

"It will facilitate the bringing together of the country's enterprises, research and development institutes and universities that are involved in transportation and logistics,'' said Wang Derong, deputy president of the China Communications and Transportation Association.

STL's members are from the railway, road, water transport, aviation, pipeline, urban transportation and information technology sectors.

According to STL's constitution, the main tasks for the society are promoting national and international exchanges and co-operation in the transportation and logistics industries, carrying out professional surveys and research, providing suggestions to enterprises and promoting the application of related technologies, as well as organizing professional training.

"We will serve as a bridge between domestic and foreign technology developers and enterprises, investors and builders, and developed and underdeveloped areas,'' said Wang.

As a result of the development gap between the country's eastern and western regions, the national transport and logistics structure should be upgraded and optimized.

STL's establishment is to meet the requirements of the ever-increasing demands and rapid development of China's transportation and logistics industries.

According to official statistics, the annual growth rates for passenger and goods transport capacities in China stand at 5.7 per cent and 3 per cent respectively for the period from 1989 to 2003.

In addition, China's modern logistics industry is developing swiftly these years, with more than 1,000 logistics parks or centres having been set up around the nation.
