Nations pledge to enhance co-operation
( 2003-09-09 09:20) (China Daily)

Premier Wen Jiabao and Ugandan Prime Minister Apollo Robin Nsibambi yesterday pledged to enhance bilateral economic co-operation.

"The Chinese Government will continue to work for the expansion of bilateral trade," a foreign ministry spokeswoman quoted Wen as saying in his talks with Nsibambi.

Uganda was one of the first African countries to establish diplomatic relations with China.

Wen said bilateral ties have seen steady development in the past four decades and the two countries have seen sound co-operation across the board.

China will encourage its enterprises to participate in the economic construction of Uganda and discuss with the Ugandan side possibilities of co-operation in such areas as energy, Wen said.

Nsibambi said Uganda expects to conduct closer co-operation with China in various areas, especially in agriculture, healthcare, energy, trade and investment.

He said Uganda has received generous help from China in its efforts to improve and raise the standard of living of the Ugandan people.

Wen and Nsibambi yesterday attended the signing ceremony of a bilateral agreement on economic and technical co-operation.

The Ugandan prime minister kicked off his seven-day official visit to China on Saturday. Besides Beijing, he will also go to Chongqing and Shanghai.

Nsibambi said Uganda will, as it has always done, firmly support the one-China policy, which meets the interests of the Chinese people as a whole.
