Wang Hao sets showdown against Ma Lin in China Open final ( 2003-09-14 15:16) (Xinhua)
The last non- Chinese table tennis player Ryu Seung-Min of South Korea bid farewell to the China Open as he was trounced by home star Wang Hao in the men's singles semi-finals here on Sunday. Despite Ryu, who upset local favorites Yan Sen and Chen Qi en route, world No. 8 Wang showed no mercy to Ryu and took the victory 4"Wang, who met Ryu once and won, said:"My backhand is very powerful to him. I think that's the way to play with him. Besides, after two of my teammates lost to him, I've studied him with my coach last night." "I was confident to beat Ryu because I ousted him before. But I have no advantage over neither Ma Lin nor Wang Liqin in the final, no matter from technique and experience," said the humble Wang. In another thrilled seven-set clash, Ma got a narrow escape over Wang Liqin, winning 4-3 (11-8, 12-10, 10-12, 7-11, 6-11, 11-5, 12-10). Led 2-0 and 10-6 in the third set, Ma was likely to finish the contest easily before Wang surged back to take the set 12-10 and the next two sets. In the last set, Ma again took the lead 7-3, but Wang made it 10-9. Ma didn't allow any more mistakes and won the game. Ma, the winner at the Korean Open in both singles and doubles, said:"I was depressed after the third set upset which had impact on me for the next sets. Fortunately, I came back before it was too late." Looking ahead of the all Chinese men's singles final, Ma said:" Wang and I are at the same level. Both of us are able to win the champion."
